Health Benefits of Coffee

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. It’s what wakes us up in the morning and keeps our productivity high through to the late afternoon. Whether you drink coffee out of necessity or for its warm, aromatic taste, you have probably wondered what exactly it is you are guzzling.


So let’s look at where this delicious beverage came from and the health benefits it offers.

What is the coffee bean?

Grown in tropical areas of the world, the coffee plant is a large shrub or bush covered with dark green, waxy leaves. These plants produce aromatic white blossoms followed by little cherry fruits. Within the center of these vibrant red fruits are two little "seeds." The coffee beans.

Once removed from the pit of these fruits, the coffee beans are processed, dried, milled and then roasted. Grind those little fruit pits up, grab your filters and let the coffee maker do the rest.

Different soil, climate, and altitudes alter the taste of the coffee bean which is why coffee from Central America tastes different from the coffee sent from Ethiopia.

A properly tended to coffee plant begins to produce fruit after three to five years once planted, and it will continue to produce fruit for an average of 50 to 60 years. Every season, the coffee plant collects up to one and a half pounds of roasted coffee. For all my coffee lovers, thats about a week and a half's worth of coffee.

Is coffee good for you?

The short answer…Yes!

Because coffee is considered one of the most popular beverages in the world, researchers continue to explore its effect on the human body. What once was thought to be a possible carcinogen is now considered a health food.  Research has continually proven drinking 3 to 4 cups a day is considered not only safe but helpful at reducing risk of disease.

But before we move on...

Coffee and Antioxidants.

Coffee contains powerful antioxidants. We need antioxidants to effectively fight off free radicals. Free radicals are the natural byproducts of chemical processes in the body, like metabolism. Left unchecked, free radicals cause harm to cells further increasing risk of disease and increased aging.

When most people think of antioxidants, they picture a handful of juicy blueberries. Even though fruits and vegetables contain healthy antioxidants, it is not a priority in the Western diet to consume the daily recommended amount. Coffee however, is so rich in antioxidants and widely consumed, most people get their daily recommended amount of antioxidants through their morning and afternoon brew.

79% of dietary antioxidants come from beverages, while only 21% come from food.

Coffee and Caffeine.

The real reason we’re all here. Coffee contains the highly sought after stimulant—caffeine.

Caffeine is a psychoactive substance responsible for a long list of reactions in the body. Once absorbed into the bloodstream, caffeine travels to your brain. Once there, caffeine goes to work improving energy levels, mood, memory, reaction times and other general mental functions.

Studies have shown how caffeine can boost your metabolism by 3-11%. Increasing your metabolism is one the best ways to help burn off those extra fat cells.

Working double time, caffeine also triggers adrenaline, which is the hormone needed for an extra sweaty workout. So not only are you pushing to burn more calories, your physical performance improves.

A meta-analysis done to test the effects of caffeine related to exercise found that caffeine improved performance by 11-12%.  That’s got to be at least an extra set of burpees.

That's definitely worth the extra cup of coffee.

Coffee and Disease.

Related to health conditions, coffee has shown to lower your risk of the following:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Dementia
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Liver disease
  • Depression
  • Stroke
  • Cancer

Keep in mind the research that supports these claims are merely observational rather than experimental. It is highly unlikely that coffee consumption is the only preventative measure you should take to avoid these conditions.

It’s a shame caffeine and antioxidants get all the attention when it comes to the health benefits of coffee. If you thought that's all there was, think again!

A single cup of black coffee contains:

  • 11% Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
  • 2% Niacin
  • 6% Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)
  • 2% Magnesium
  • 1% Phosphorus
  • 3% Potassium
  • 3% Manganese

Percentages are all based on the daily recommended amount. Might seem like insignificant amounts at first glance, however, it adds up the more cups of coffee you drink.
