Lava Lamps

A Brit by the name of Edward Craven Walker invented the original lava lamp that we all known and love in 1965. Edward dubbed his new invention the "Astrolight" and put it on display in 1965 at a tradeshow in Brussels, Germany. An American by the name of Adolph Wertheimer noticed Walker's invention and, along with his partner William Rubinstein, agreed to purchase the American rights to the device. The two formed a new company and called it "Lava Simplex Internation." It was through this new corporation that the first lava lamps went on sale in the United States.

Lava lamps are often associated with 1960's and 1970's culture. The strange, swirling appearance of promotional lava lamps has been compared to the hallucinations that are caused by recreational drugs that were gaining popularity during this period of time.

Lava lamps come with a light bulb, glass container, wire coil, and a mixture of water, wax, and carbon tetrachloride. When the lamp is activated, and as the bottle rests upon the surface of the bulb, the mixture is heated. The wax inside eventually heats to a point where it melts and becomes slightly less dense than the surrounding water. It is at this point that the mystic appearance of the lamp that we are all familiar with begins to show itself.
