Who Say’s Custom Fanny Packs Aren’t Cool Anymore?

Well it happened. I had to check the “30 or older” box on a form the other day. As of August I’m no longer classified as a “young adult”. I think that must be why the reason why I haven’t quite grasped the phenomenon of fanny packs and other 80’s inspired promo items that we sell. Okay, so I actually did have a fanny pack when I was growing up – when I was 8 – that I wore around the Disney theme parks while growing up on Orlando. But I wasn’t exactly a fashion icon in the ’80’s. Huge pink plastic glasses that nearly took up my entire face, frizzy hair hidden under a mountain of scrunchies, buck teeth, neon tube socks, and poor fashion sense. But at least I was practical. I mean, what’s not handy about nylon 6-compartment kangaroo pouch around your waist?

At some point over the years practicality seems to have grown into novelty though, and now fanny packs are back in full force! At least I think it’s a novelty thing. This retro stuff has been selling like hotcakes! Easily they are the most popular promotional item among fraternities and sororities, and even picking up steam among any companies looking to appeal to a younger demographic. Promotional Drinkware for you and your favorite furry one too!

I love finding new products that are multi-purpose items. One of the hottest promotional products this year is the Cosmo. It’s an 18 oz. double wall insulated bottle that is BPA-free! It comes with an 12 oz. threaded cup/lid and can be used for hot or cold beverages. The Cosmo is available in a wide variety of colors (Clear, Blue, Aqua, Purple, Red, Graphite, Tangerine, Apple and Fuchsia.)

The other day my husband and I took our puppy on a picnic. It was on one of the hottest days we have had so far this spring, so I knew we had to have some water for the pup. I didn’t want to carry a bowl or tupperware, so I decided to take the Cosmo along. I filled it up with ice cold water and poured a little at a time into the cup/lid for her to drink out of. It was portable and easy to carry along without making a mess.

Another use for this particular cup is to take to the beach or the lake. Everyone likes to take some sort of cocktail or beverage with them to the beach or while boating on the lake. The cup is ideal for sipping out of without having to hold on to the 18 oz. bottle. This way to you are able to keep it out of the sun, so the entire bottle avoids getting warm at once.

“Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag,” Promotional Drawstring Bags

One of our most popular items for the last few years has been the promotional drawstring bag. I was cooking up ideas for this particular post last week, and noticed people had them everywhere. I people using them at the gym, going into Starbucks, and leaving school or a sporting event.

Not only do people use them at the gym, some gyms even sell them with their logo on the front. I noticed this week that our gym sells them. Now that the briefcase is kind of a thing of the past, people use all sorts of bags to transport their necessities. The imprinted drawstring bag is great for the guy (or girl) on the go. My younger brother is a sophomore in high school, and is a huge fan of the drawstring bag. He uses them at school and to put his soccer cleats in for practice. When I was a cheerleader back in the day, we were give a drawstring bag to put our gear in for the games.

Marathons, Triathlons, and bike races, such as the MS150, seem to be on the rise. I ran a measly 5k a few years back, and when I went to get my tag to check in I was given a drawstring bag full of promotional products. This is one reason I feel like they are a great giveaway for sporting events and races.

What is customer service, anyway?

Years ago a friend of mine worked as a customer service rep for a major financial institution. She was on the inbound call team answering call after call, with each caller having a different issue that needed resolution. Her company had just gone through a major merger, so needless to say that there were a lot of issues to resolve. She would tell me that at times it was hard to recognize each caller as a person with a real issue and not just think of them as another call to get through.

Back in those days if you would have asked me what I thought customer service was, I would have told you a person in a call center who answers the phone and hopefully or maybe resolves your issue. Thankfully times have really changed. Customers are fed up with bad service and have demanded change. Thanks to Social Media and modern technology, gone are the days when a complaint goes unheard.

A few months ago several of us in the office were turned on to a book called The Thank You Economy. It really got us thinking about how we interact with our customers. One of the first things we realized was that we needed to be communicating with our customers shortly after they received their order to make sure they experienced great service and that they were happy with the product they ordered. Thankfully implementing this simple yet important process has helped us both improve how we serve customers and also resolve issues on orders.

We realize that there is always room for improvement. Our goal is to find the areas that need improving while learning through our mistakes. Sometimes it’s realizing that a phone call to personally apologize might be better received than an email, or when to right a wrong, when it’s not necessarily a mistake that you made. Our motto is to treat customers the way we want to be treated.

And so I leave with you my personal belief that customer service is not a department, it’s an attitude!
